When should you appeal?

We made a mistake

Our AI flagged content by accident. Context was misunderstood. We applied the wrong policy. A false positive happened. Appeal to fix our error.

You have new context

Your account was suspended, but you have new information. You can explain the context we might have missed. Give the review team the full picture.

You disagree with the interpretation

You believe the content or behavior doesn't actually violate our standards. You interpreted a policy differently. Make your case to a fresh reviewer.

The punishment seems unfair

The violation happened, but the penalty was too harsh. You're a first-time offender. Appeal the severity of the enforcement action.

Three types of appeals

Different actions require different appeals. Choose the one that applies to your situation.

1

Content Removal

Your post, comment, or image was removed. Appeal if you believe it didn't violate our community standards.

2

Account Suspension

Your account is temporarily suspended (usually 7-30 days). Appeal if you believe the suspension was unfair.

3

Account Ban

Your account was permanently banned. You can still appeal, but this is our strongest enforcement action. We listen to all appeals.

Real appeals that were overturned

These are actual cases from Q3 2026. Names changed for privacy. These show when appeals work.

False hate speech flag

✓ Appeal Overturned

What happened: AI flagged a comment using a reclaimed term. User explained it was used positively within their community.

Appeal: "This term is reclaimed by our community and I use it proudly. Your system didn't understand context."

Result: Decision overturned. Content restored. User unbanned.

Sarcasm misread as threat

✓ Appeal Overturned

What happened: Account suspended for "threatening violence." User's sarcastic post was interpreted literally.

Appeal: "Read it in context of the conversation. It's clearly sarcasm about a policy, not a real threat."

Result: Decision overturned. Account reinstated.

Disability context missed

✓ Appeal Overturned

What happened: Comment removed for "ableist language." But user had disclosed their disability in context.

Appeal: "I'm autistic and this is how I describe my own experience. Removing it erases disability narratives."

Result: Decision overturned. Content restored with context note.

Overly harsh penalty

✓ Appeal Overturned

What happened: First violation resulted in immediate 30-day suspension. No warning first.

Appeal: "This is my first violation ever. I didn't know I was breaking a rule. A warning would have been fair."

Result: Suspension reduced to 7 days. Opportunity to improve.

How to write a strong appeal

How to write a strong appeal
✓Be specific about why you disagree
✓Provide new context we might have missed
✓Explain any misunderstandings
✓Show you understand the policy
✓Be respectful and honest
✓Keep it concise but complete
✕Just say "I didn't do it" with no explanation
✕Insult the moderators or platform
✕Ask for special treatment or exceptions
✕Threaten legal action or social media exposure
✕Submit the same appeal multiple times
✕Leave it blank or write nonsense

📝 Example of a strong appeal

"My account was suspended for hate speech, but my comment used a reclaimed term. I'm a member of the LGBTQ+ community and use this term proudly about myself. Looking back at my comment thread, you can see I was sharing my personal experience positively. I understand why an algorithm might flag it, but context matters. I request review by a human moderator who understands community language."

✓ Specific issue · ✓ New context · ✓ Shows understanding · ✓ Respectful tone
